Resort Information
The clear, warm Wörthersee is nestled in the south of Austria, with a warm, sunny climate, similar to that of Lake Garda in Italy. Pörtschach has a beautiful setting on a small peninsula on the northern shore of Lake Wörthersee. The leafy village has a bustling main street with a selection of shops and cafés and an attractive tree-lined lakeside promenade. Take a stroll and admire the exclusive lakeside residences or take a refreshing dip in the warm lake waters at the fantastic resort lido, complete with giant waterslide. While the resort is a famous centre for top tennis tournaments, the lake itself is a playground for watersport fanatics, watch from the lakeside or have a go yourself! Also a superb choice for exploring Carinthia, the excellent ferry, train and bus links make it easy to visit the other villages around the lake as well as the many sights and attractions further afield. Accommodation is also available in Velden at the west end of Lake Wörthersee, see Velden Resort Guide.
Walking
Many miles of well marked trails surround the lake, from gentle walks along the lake's edge to climbs through the surrounding foothills to smaller mountain lakes. The 'Hohenrundweg' is a complete circuit of the lake through the foothills which you could attempt to walk-in sections! About two hours walk from Reifnitz is the Pyramidenkogel viewing tower (only accessible by foot) with breathtaking views of the entire Carinthian lakes district. By using the excellent local transport, the scope for walking is virtually endless!
Activities
The village has a landing stage for the lake's boat service - a lovely way to explore the lake. The climate and warm lake water makes this a perfect place to enjoy a wealth of sports and activities including sailing, boating and swimming. There is a cycle path running the whole length of the northern side of the lake from Klagenfurt to Velden, mountain biking in the foothills around the lake and bike hire available locally. Tennis is another popular pass-time - the Hotel Werzer Resort offers tremendous facilities. Velden is also well worth a visit for it's 3 x weekly sound, light and water show (June-August). Your Carinthia Card also opens up a wealth of opportunities for exploring the area - too many to list here. If you'd like more information please see their website: www.kaerntencard.co.at. For those wishing to visit specific attractions, for example all the family attractions, we recommend hiring a car.
