St. Gilgen Resort Guide

Resort Information

The attractive village centre has many fresco painted buildings, shops, coffee houses, bars and restaurants. It also boasts a small 'Mozart Museum' situated in the house where Wolfgang Amadeus' mother was born. In the evenings the village brass band plays regular concerts and during July and August colourful traditional folklore evenings take place in a lakeside restaurant. For some of the most stunning views in the whole of the Austrian Lake District, take the cable-car to the top of the Zwölferhorn mountain.

Walking

There are some great walks from the village including a very popular hike via 'Mozartblick' (Mozart's View) to the neighbouring Lake Fuschl, or the lakeside path to Fürberg - if you then carry on you can climb over the Falkenstein Cliff, following the ancient 'Pilgrims' Way' to St. Wolfgang. Lake steamers afford many other starting points for walks around the 11km long lake. From St. Gilgen take an excursion to the Postalm near Strobl, one of the most beautiful plateaux in the Eastern Alps.

Activities

A must during your stay in St. Gilgen is a ride on the Zwölferhorn cable-car, and by using the lake steamers you can easily visit Strobl, or visit St. Wolfgang and ride on the cog-railway. The village has its own indoor swimming pool with lakeside bathing area and you can try many other water pursuits on the lake - sailing, windsurfing, fishing, waterskiing. Alternatively enjoy the stunning views from the lake by taking out a pedalo, electric boat or rowing boat.
St. Gilgen also has a lot to offer for families. There's a play park, a bowling alley, mini-golf and a riding school. The tourist office also organises a weekly children's programme for children from 4 years during July and August (small local charge, bookable locally). Best of all there is the 'Animal Village' just outside of St. Gilgen.
