Resort Information
The clear, warm Wörthersee is nestled in the south of Austria, with a warm, sunny climate, similar to that of Lake Garda in Italy. The cosmopolitan town of Velden is a popular resort on the westernmost tip of Lake Wörthersee. The town has a vibrant yet relaxed atmosphere, sophisticated shopping and a selection of bars and restaurants. To really appreciate the mediterranean-style ambience the warm weather allows you to enjoy the lakeside beaches and lidos. The calm mornings make the lake ideal for waterskiing and wakeboarding with light breezes in the day for sailing. The impressive lakeside promenade is a hive of activity both by day and night and the perfect place to stop for a drink, at one of the many bars or cafes, to admire the truly spectacular views across the inviting lake to the Karawanken mountains. Accommodation is also available in Pörtscach on the north shore of Lake Wörthersee, see Pörtscach Resort Guide.
Walking
Many miles of well marked trails surround the lake, from gentle walks along the lake's edge to climbs through the surrounding foothills to smaller mountain lakes. The 'Hohenrundweg' is a complete circuit of the lake through the foothills which you could attempt to walk-in sections! About two hours walk from Reifnitz is the Pyramidenkogel viewing tower (only accessible by foot) with breathtaking views of the entire Carinthian lakes district. By using the excellent local transport, the scope for walking is virtually endless!
Activities
There is a landing stage in the village for the lake's boat service - a lovely way to explore the lake. The climate and warm lake water makes this a perfect place to enjoy a wealth of sports and activities including windsurfing, sailing, boating and swimming. There is a cycle path running the whole length of the northern side of the lake from Klagenfurt to Velden, mountain biking in the foothills around the lake and bike hire available locally. Velden has lots of events taking place throughout the summer and is famous for it's 3 x weekly sound, light and water show (June-August). Your Carinthia Card also opens up a wealth of opportunities for exploring the area - too many to list here. If you'd like more information please see their website: www.kaerntencard.co.at. For those wishing to visit specific attractions, for example all the family attractions, we recommend hiring a car.
