Resort Information
On the Gulf of Kvarner, Opatija still retains an air of grandeur and is protected by a backdrop of high mountains, covered in woodland and lush vegetation. The beautiful parks and gardens are full of sweet smelling cedars, palms, magnolia, wisteria and mimosa, well suited to the soft climate. The attractive coastal promenade, extends along the Gulf of Kvarner and boasts a wonderful range of restaurants, bars, cafés and shops, making Opatija a lively and exciting seaside resort.
Walking
The hills around Opatija offer some wonderful walking opportunities and the resort lies at the foot of mighty Mount Ucka, (1400m), the highest peak in the Istrian peninsula. There are a wide variety of marked trails though the wooded slopes, dotted with waterfalls including a 2 hour walk to the medieval fortified mountain village of Veprinac, which offers wonderful views of the coastline. The celebrated 12km promenade (lungomare) stretches from Preluka to Lovran, hugs the coast and offers an enjoyable walk, passing beautiful scenery, pretty pebbled bathing beaches and picturesque villages. Amongst the sights along the way is the small, tranquil fishing village of Volosko and the fabulous port of Lovran.
Activities
A wide range of activities are available in resort, such as water-skiing, windsurfing and scuba-diving. To experience even more of the region, you can take a boat trip to the neighbouring islands of Cres and Krk. Other days out, include a visit to the fantastic Plitvice Lakes or you could even take a hydrofoil across to Venice, both of these are normally available to book once in resort. In the evenings, there are many bars, restaurants and casinos to tempt you. There are also occasional open-air concerts, operas, films and folk dancing shows.
