Berchtesgaden Resort Guide

Resort Information

Protected by Germany's second highest mountain, the Watzmann (2713m), Bechtesgadener Land has stunning scenery wrapped in a blanket of tales of its famous history. Berchtesgaden sits on the hillside with attractive cobbled streets and inviting cafés, centered around the Royal Castle.

Walking

There are approximately 240km of hiking paths throughout 'Berchtesgadener Land', many of which are in the National Park, around the Königssee (6km away). There are many mountain huts/restaurants to stop at during your walks, and a wide range of flora and alpine animals to spot. Guided walks are organised by the tourist office.
A definite walk not to miss is up to the Jenner Mountain (1874m), where you can take in one of the most famous mountain views, towards the Watzmann (2713m). The Jenner is also served by a summer gondola lift (mid-May to Oct), so you can elect to do as much or as little of the walk as you like! A 7-day Walker's Lift Pass (approx. €47) and walking maps are available locally.

Activities

'Berchtesgadener Land' is a holiday paradise - there is so much to do and see! You can visit the Royal Castle in the town centre or take a fun tour of the salt mines, learn about and sample gentian schnapps at Germany's oldest schnapps distillery or tour the fascinating Obersalzburg Documentation Centre. Perched high above the town, Hitler's "Eagle's Nest" offers amazing views, and down in the valley you can have fun and pamper yourself at the 'Watzmann Therme' pool and spa. There is also a summer toboggan run, eagle and alpine animal zoo, horse riding, mini-golf, tennnis and golf. Some evening highlights include the "Königs-Seerenade" (evening boat trip on lake Königssee) and 'Eagle's Nest at Night', as well as a number of traditional festivals and regular music events and theatre performances.
Nearby Königssee (6km from Berchtesgaden), the "King's Lake", and the small village of Schönau on its shores, have a magical setting, quite unlike any other and surrounded by National Park.
