Resort Information
The waters of Lake Maggiore straddle the Italian/Swiss border as Mediterranean nature and climate blend with spectacular Alpine scenery. Stresa is the main town on the west shore and offers plenty to do, with colourful cafés and boutiques. Picturesque Baveno has a relaxing atmosphere with pleasant lakeside cafés. The whole Lake Maggiore area is rich in beautiful buildings, colourful gardens and is enhanced by the three delightful Borromean islands.
Walking
Most resorts offer pleasant walks in the hills behind the lake. The best views are from Mottarone at a height of almost 5,000ft and there is an interesting Alpine Garden at the middle station. The walk to Belgirate, 5kms south of Stresa, goes through the woods of the Mottarone. The Tourist Office provides a map with some walks described in English.
Activities
Boat trips on the lake with visits to the beautiful Borromean Islands are a must. Mountain bikes are available for hire in Stresa or alternatively motor and sailing boats can be hired near Belgirate. Golf, tennis and horse riding can be arranged nearby.
