Zakopane Resort Guide

Resort Information

Beautiful forested mountains provide the backdrop to the truly unique and vibrant town of Zakopane. The region has developed around the traditions of the Polish Highland folk with its own distinct culture and architecture. The town has markets, handicraft stalls, beautiful wooden houses and churches adorning the streets and is bustling with visitors in high season. Early and late season are more peaceful times of the year. The National parkland, with sparkling lakes and magnificent scenery has some great mountain walks. Zakopane is also close to many historical attractions, making this an all round holiday experience.

Walking

With wonderful mountain flora, creeks and waterfalls, walking in the Tatras mountains provides some amazing opportunities, from gentle strolls to climbing to the summit, ever closer to the 'sleeping knight' (the famous mountain peak and the symbol of Zakopane). You can enter the National Park (small local charge) just behind the Belvedere hotel and from there you have a wide choice of walks. Alternatively take the funicular or the cable-car from Zakopane for some magnificent views looking over the valley. All paths are clearly marked and English-speaking local guides are available to offer advice.

Activities

There is always something to do in Zakopane. Day trips out into the National parks are a must and a visit to the breathtaking Morskie Oko lake should not be missed. You can also take a discovery tour around Zakopane and taste the local speciality of home-smoked sheep's cheese, or take a day trip to Slovakia - just a short drive away. Zakopane is also host to the World's summer ski jumping World Cup in August. Back in the town there are daily markets selling traditional Polish souvenirs as well as traditional Highlander Folk evenings with live music and delicious Polish cuisine.
