Lake Bohinj Resort Guide

Resort Information

The enchanting Lake Bohinj is only 22kms from Bled and is the largest lake in Slovenia at 5km in length. Framed by the majestic and jagged peaks of the Julian Alps, rocky and sheer on one side, pine clad and gently sloping on the other, Lake Bohinj enjoys one of the most vividly picturesque and unspoilt natural settings. The villages around the lake are nestled on the wooded shores, with their charming alpine houses blending perfectly into the landscape. Small beaches are dotted along the lakeshore, perfect for bathing and there are also tremendous lake and mountain views from Mount Vogel*.

Walking

Easy, tranquil walks are plentiful around the lake, with numerous more demanding hikes also available if you are looking to explore more of the area. There are 16 marked hiking routes in the area, ask your remote rep or at the tourist office in Bohinjska Bistrica for further information. Try the 'Seven lakes hike' or the 'Savica waterfall walk', over mountain brooks and streams to ravines and gorges. For more serious hiking, you should try the full day's trek up to Prsivec, in the very heart of the Julian Alps. For fantastic views across the lake and beyond, make sure you go to the top of the Vogel mountain (cable car* operates from 15/06-15/09, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., every 30 minutes).

Activities

Protected by the mountains, the summer climate is ideal for many activities, including hiking, swimming, fishing, crazy golf, tennis, canoeing, canyoning, rafting, climbing and many more! Biking in Bohinj is great for all ages. There are 15 marked biking trails of differing difficulty levels. A variety of great trout fishing is possible on the lake, although a licence will need to be purchased. Numerous events take place throughout the Summer, in the villages surrounding the lake, including; a classical music festival and performances by the Bohinj Brass band. There are also many traditional festivals, such as the 'Rural Wedding', (normally held in mid-July), "Vasovanje" presenting old habits and customs (normally held in mid-July) and the superbly named 'Cows' ball' (normally held towards the end of September). Please check for the exact dates of these events.
